A Closer Look at Marvel Legends and Similar Collectibles
Build-A-Figure (BAF) toy lines, popularized by collectibles like Marvel Legends, have gained a significant following among action figure enthusiasts. These lines offer a unique and interactive way for fans to assemble larger, more intricate figures by collecting individual components from different figures within the same series. However, like any collecting trend, there are both advantages and drawbacks to this approach. In this article, we'll delve into the pros and cons of Build-A-Figure toy lines.
- Marvel Legends (ToyBiz/Hasbro)
DC Multiverse/DC Universe Classics (Mattel/McFarlane Toys)
Star Wars: The Black Series (Hasbro)
Transformers: Cyberverse (Hasbro)
Ghostbusters Plasma Series (Hasbro)
WWE (Mattel)
Pros:
Collectibility and Completionist Appeal: BAF toy lines cater to collectors who enjoy completing sets. The incentive to acquire all the figures in a series to build the complete figure adds a layer of satisfaction for completionist collectors.
Enhanced Detail and Articulation: BAF figures often boast a higher level of detail and articulation compared to standalone figures. Since the focus is on creating a larger, more intricate figure, manufacturers may invest more effort into sculpting and articulation. Most BAFs have unique molding.
Unique and Exclusive Characters: Build-A-Figure waves often feature characters that might not get standalone releases. This exclusivity adds value to the line and entices collectors to participate in completing the set. For example, check out Crystar!
Community and Trading Opportunities: The nature of BAF lines encourages community engagement. Collectors may trade or sell spare parts, fostering a sense of community and collaboration among enthusiasts. Check out some of the Facebook groups for access.
Extended Interest and Longevity: BAF lines can maintain interest over a more extended period, as new waves are released, each with its unique buildable figure. This can keep collectors engaged in the hobby over time.
Cons:
Cost and Accessibility: Completing a BAF often requires purchasing multiple figures, which can be expensive. This cost can be a barrier for some collectors, particularly those on a budget. Also, when a character is popular, it makes it harder to locate that specific figure if everyone is tracking that figure down regardless of wanting the BAF parts.
Quality Discrepancies: Some collectors may experience issues with the consistency of figure quality within a BAF series. Parts from different shipments may not always fit seamlessly or the color variations from different paints can lead to potential frustration.
Limited Articulation and Molding in Individual Figures: Standalone figures in a BAF series may have limited articulation since the primary focus is on completing the larger figure. This limitation can affect the poseability and playability of individual figures. This also means a lot of figures will be made with reused molds and parts... Bucky Cap buck anyone?
Space and Display Challenges: Completed BAF figures can be large and may pose challenges for collectors with limited display space. Finding suitable display options for these larger figures can be a logistical issue.
Missed Opportunities for Fan-Favorite Characters: Some fans may be disappointed if their favorite characters are only available as the BAF line, especially if they have no plans for standalone releases.
Redundant Characters: A lot of waves include characters that have been made multiple times in other costumes/attire/gear. For example, 2023 saw at least six Iron Man figures in the Marvel Legends line.
Also, sometimes BAFs are released later on as individual releases which I can imagine upsets consumers. Hasbro has released Red Hulk, Vulture (MCU), Apocalypse, and a few others that once were exclusively BAFs to the Marvel Legends.
Build-A-Figure toy lines, exemplified by Marvel Legends, offer a unique collecting experience with both positive and negative aspects. The appeal of completing a larger figure and the community engagement it fosters may outweigh the drawbacks for many collectors. However, the cost, quality concerns, and space considerations should be carefully considered by those entering the world of BAF collecting. Ultimately, whether you love the thrill of completion or prefer standalone figures, the diverse world of action figure collecting has something for everyone.
